The test principle of automatic pencil hardness tester:

The hardness of the surface of the coating layer is tested by scratching the surface of the coating layer with a hardness pencil. The hardness pencil is fixed at a 45° Angle so that the front end of the pen is in contact with the surface of the coating layer, and the test platform is moved with appropriate load at a certain speed (JIS specification 0.5mm/ SEC) so that the surface of the coating layer moves through the pen center. The softest pencil grade in which the coating will not cause damage (scratch) is considered as the hardness of the coating.

The use of automatic pencil hardness tester:

1. The pencil should be well planed, with graphite protruding about 5 mm. Special pencil planers included in the scope of supply can be used to achieve this requirement. Hold the pencil vertically, graphite side down against the sandpaper (400 particle fine) to smooth the graphite core and sharpen the edge.

2, clamp the pencil in the instrument, the pencil protruding 5mm, and then put the instrument on the surface of the template. The tachometer displays the motor speed in real time. The platform moves 1.75mm for each turn of the motor. Clamp the sample to be tested on the test platform.

3, choose the appropriate hardness of the pencil depends on the test. It is recommended to start with a medium soft pencil or a medium hard pencil and work your way up to finding the right pencil.

4. During the test, be careful not to confuse the pencil's word marks and penetration marks. If necessary, use a wet sponge or a soft eraser to remove excess line marks.

5. The numbers of both pencils are marked by pencil hardness. Pencil hardness such as 2H... 3H, meaning that the 2H pencil can leave a word mark on the surface while the 3H pencil can scratch the film slightly. The hardness of the film is 2H.

6. Paint with high pigment content or paint containing flake pigment is not recommended to use this test method for testing.
